From Students to Colleagues: Justin’s Full-Circle Moments

Meet justin siebert,
Class of 2012

Justin Siebert never imagined that one day he would be coaching teachers who were once his own students. But after 12 years in Memphis, Justin’s story is one of full-circle moments, professional growth, and a deep appreciation for the impact of Memphis Teacher Residency.

When Justin first arrived in Memphis in 2011 to start MTR, it was his first time in the city. As an engineering graduate, he had been weighing different options, but MTR won him over. "If I didn’t say yes, I thought I would be missing out on something," Justin recalls. That leap of faith turned into a transformative career path.

Now a Dean of Curriculum and Instruction for STEM at Collegiate, Justin spends his days teaching AP Chemistry and coaching math and science teachers. His commitment to education is rooted in the relationships and lessons he gained through MTR.

One of the most pivotal relationships in his journey was with Chuck (MTR Staff), who was his mentor teacher during his residency year at Kingsbury High. “We were both new to the school and figuring things out together,” Justin explains. “Chuck was so open—to experimenting, having conversations, and trying new things. If I hadn’t had that positive mentor relationship, I might not still be a teacher today.”

One of the most rewarding parts of his job is reconnecting with former students—especially those who followed his footsteps into teaching. Among them is a former anatomy and physiology student who later joined MTR. “I hosted him for dinner during his first year and talked about teaching,” Justin shares. “Now, he’s my colleague. It’s incredible to see him—and others like him—bring fresh perspectives to the work.”

In fact, Justin now coaches four teachers who were once his students. While some might find that dynamic unusual, Justin embraces it as a testament to the power of education and mentorship. “It’s so inspiring. These newer teachers have a unique understanding of our mission and bring new ideas that strengthen our team.”

Justin’s dedication to the mission of MTR has deepened over time. He appreciates how MTR remains steadfast in its commitment to building capacity, fostering relationships, and supporting educators long after they’ve left the residency program. “MTR does a great job of keeping alums involved,” he says. “Whether it’s events like Back-to-School Bash or opportunities to present at MTR University, there’s always a way to grow and stay connected.”

Even after more than a decade, Justin remains energized by Memphis and its people. He admires the city’s underdog spirit and the way so many come together to solve problems and make a difference.

“There’s a drive and determination here that’s unmatched.”

For Justin, the heart of that drive is the MTR mission—a mission that has shaped his career, his relationships, and his impact. From the lessons he learned from Chuck to the joy of mentoring former students turned colleagues, Justin’s story shows how teaching can build a significant legacy.
